A fireplace or stove pushes smoke into the room when the flue is not pulling hard enough to lift it. In Spokane the usual suspects are a cold-soaked chimney, a tight house full of running fans, or a flue with something in it. The first two you can test yourself before dinner.
Cold-soak starts

An exterior chimney that has sat at 15°F all day holds a plug of dense cold air that your kindling has to overpower. Prime it: a rolled-newspaper torch held near the open damper for a minute, until the airflow flips upward, then light.
Stoves have their own version — top-down fire building (big splits below, kindling above) warms the flue gently and beats the smolder-and-hope method every time.
The tight-house problem
Winter-sealed houses running furnace, bath fans, and dryer are exhausting air that must come back somehow, and the flue volunteers. Crack a window an inch near the hearth; if the smoke stops, you have found the mechanism.
Durable fixes run from the window habit to a dedicated outside-air supply at the firebox — a sweep can size the right one after seeing the setup.
When something is physically wrong
Priming fails and the window fails: check the damper with a flashlight — rusted half-open is common in older Spokane fireplaces. Past the damper, think nest, heavy creosote, or a liner problem, all camera territory.
A flue that has always smoked may simply be undersized for its opening — a design problem with known fixes, from smoke guards to relining.
Know when to stop
Smoke every burn, smoke smell reaching bedrooms, visible glaze, or any suspicion of a past flue fire: stop using it and get the inspection. And keep a CO alarm on the same floor as any wood appliance — smoke in the room means combustion gas in the room.
The five-minute triage
Prime with a newspaper torch — fixed means cold-start behavior, manage it with top-down fires. Crack a window — fixed means house pressure, talk options. Both fail — flashlight the damper, then book the camera, because something is in the flue.
One evening of testing usually replaces weeks of living with a smoky room, and it tells the sweep exactly which visit to bring.
